What are people allergic to in this season?

I have an allergy episode in almost every season. I've never had an allergy test due to cost, so I just take claritin. But, what things right now are making people sick? Pollen is the worst in the south right now, but I'm in WV.

Reply:If you have allergies during every season, despite the cost, you NEED to have your primary care doc refer you to an allergist. He will do tests to determine exactly what you are allergic to and then devise a personalized treatment plan for you. Your plan may include prescription nasal sprays, prescription oral meds, and/or shots.

What kewtber told you is not accurate. It IS necessary to know what you are allergic to because treatment plans are NOT all the same. They need to be individualized and only a competent allergist can do that for you. I am an RN. If kewtber were a nurse I think she would indicate that.

If you have no insurance, check into what insurance your state offers, such as medicaid. If not eligible for state insurance, talk to the allergist and see if you can work out a payment plan. If he is a decent doc he will realize you are suffering and work something out with you.

There are things you can do for yourself before you see the allergist.

If you have trouble breathing, get Breathe Right nasal strips. These are slim, bandaid-like strips that fit over the bridge of the nose and hold the nasal passages open so you can breathe freely. My husband just started using them after years of sinus and allergy problems and they are a Godsend. He can breathe freely and sleep thru the night. There are generics out there that are identical to the brand name and less expensive. Ask you pharmacist about generics.

You may also try a saline based nasal spray. These can be used every 2 hrs as needed. Instructions for administering are on bottle.

My allergist suggested I get a cool mist vaporizer. I found one at Walmart for a reasonable price. Put it in your bedroom and it should help with nighttime symptoms.

Please do consider the allergist. I understand having limited funds. I've been there. But when it comes to your health you must be your own advocate and find a way to get the treatment you need.
Reply:same thing as always ragweed, pollen from trees, grass, weeds...

if you have any kind of seasonal allergies you need medication, plain and simple...an allergy test really isn't all that necessary, it will tell you specifically what you are allergic too, but the treatment is basically the same so if you already know you have seasonal allergies find out what meds work and take your meds...there are plenty of meds you can take, claritin being one of them...ask your regular doctor and do some research on the net...
