Why can we say that the embryo sac is the female gametophyte in flowering plants?the pollen grain for male?
There are a few reasons. Firstly, the embryo sac (which is inside the ovule) remains at its place of growth, like an ovum, while the pollen grains travel to it, like sperm do. Also, the plant produces only a small number of embryo sacs, while huge numbers of pollen grains, are produced, again like eggs and sperm. Most importantly, the pollen grain enters the embryo sac and fertilizes it, making it quite clear which gamete is male and which is female.
